Linguistic identities: Embracing the journey

Our languages tell the story of who we are. Rather, it tells parts of the story of who we are and where we have been. Expressions, chosen words, intonation, sounds we can’t quite reproduce constitute parts of our linguistic repertoire and of our evolving identity. Being a confident bilingual is all about awareness as we face some aspects of multilingualism that we often overlook – linguistic insecurity in one language, dominance of another, fear of losing a language, uncertainty about where we “belong”.

This workshop invites you to explore your personal language journey and reflect on how to live harmoniously with all your languages. Through guided reflection and interactive activities, we will examine our language biographies, build awareness around multilingualism and its emotional dimensions to transform our perceived insecurities into strength. 

Jane Fabulet-Roberts loves learning, languages, listening to and telling stories. With over 20 years of experience in teaching, a background in theater, and a degree in sociolinguistics (specializing in multilingualism and intercultural mediation), she is a hybrid professional who has worked for many non-profits and schools with children and adults.
